In Bend, Oregon at a Safeway store after shooting at his
apartment complex
20 year old Ethan Miller started shooting at shoppers in the store with deadly
effects
He shot and killed Edward Bennett a shopper who was 84
And but for the efforts of a brave Good Samaritan he would have killed more
A 66 year old Safeway employee who had served in the U.S. Army for 26 years
Tried to disarm Miller when in the produce section he appeared
While the two fought for his gun, shoppers from the store to safety fled
Glenn Surrett, Jr. in his efforts failed and was shot dead
As police were arriving in less than four minutes this coward shot himself in
the head
Police investigation after the fact disclosed a desire to be a mass shooter was
a life he led
A brave former vet with no hesitation to in an attempt to save lives
The residents of Bend are in mourning he did not survive
But to this story of bravery there is more to tell
Of a man who was heading to be consumed in the fires of Hell
In 1994 while a sergeant he pled guilty to sexual abuse of a
minor and sentenced to 10 years
Was released without serving the full sentence to a better law abiding role his
life steer
Not sure why he was released early but probably a good thing
Most felons maybe even in military prisons a heap of violence on child molesters
are prone to bring
Surrett’s story is one to herald the fact that even the most heinous felon can
to a law abiding life return
Sadly we must get better to be able to the ones who cannot reform we are able
to learn
