Ridley's Believe It Or Not August 3 History Friendship Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—August 3, 2014:  Another meager day of holidays but you are probably on vacation anyway and are already celebrating. Hope you enjoy what is posted, along with the factoids and quote from C.S. Lewis reads with a smile on your face and a cold watermelon you are sharing with friends.
           1. Esther Day—celebrating an amazing, talented and intelligent girl who fought a childhood cancer with bravery and spirit and packed a lifetime of accomplishments in her short life. Go to    http://tswgo.org/esthers-story.html for her story--you will be inspired!
           2. Friendship Day—celebrated on the first Sunday in August since 1935 although given the value of friends this is a holiday that should be observed on a more frequent basis.
            3. National Watermelon Day---celebrating a great summer food with over 300 kinds, 92 percent water so you can eat till completely sated.
            4. Go Grab Some Nuts Day—celebrating not a drive to treat the mentally ill or a sure way to get a man’s attention but that tasty and nutritious food—nuts. It’s okay to enjoy peanuts (legumes) today without feeling that you are not in the holiday spirit.
On this day in
             a. 1972 the Senate ratified the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty; in 2002 the United States withdrew from the treaty, the first international arms control treat it has ever withdrawn from.
             b. 1977 the Senate commenced hearings on the CIA’s secret mind control program MKUltra which the agency carried on from 1953 to 1973 involved among contemptible act the surreptitious administration of LSD—no wonder the trust in our government continues to fall.
             c. 1977 Tandy Corporation introduced the first mass produced personal computer TRS-80 for a price of $500, over $2300 in 2014 dollars.
To have a friend you must be a friend: “Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art... It has no survival value; rather is one of those things that give value to survival." C.S. Lewis noted Irish author of the 20th Century
