The Iditarod The Last Great Race on Earth: Standings as of The Iditarod The Last Great Race As of March 12, 2023 16:11:11: Redington, Kaiser and Diehl are the unchanged top three, Kaiser 46 minutes hind Redington and 78 minutes ahead of Diehl and are the only 3 mushers in Shaktoolik only 221 miles from Nome a not so balmy 0 degrees, dropping to minus 6 at 2 A.M. and being chased by 2 mushers, Hall and Maixner 34 minutes apart out of Unalakleet, 261 miles from Nome and not so balmy minus 2 degrees dropping to minus 10 at 2 A.M. while 5 musher including rookie Hunter Keefe at 6th who has passed Eddie Burke in 7th and Wade Marrs who has moved up to 10th are still in Unalakleet. 8 mushers have left Kaltag, 346 miles from Nome including leading female Mille Porsild in 11th place and leading female rookie KattiJo Deeter, leaving 3 mushers to enjoy Kaltag’s 13 degree weather dropping to minus 15 degrees at 3 A.M. The Barrington Twins leaving Eagle Lake not in tandem mode but side by side are in 22nd and 23rd place enroute to Kaltag.I n the race for the Red Lantern, Gregg Vitello has dropped out of the race but his son Bailey in 27th place1 minute behind Joanna Legrow in 26th and the slowest female on the course. In the race for the Red Lantern, Rookie Jed Stephensen is in 30th, last place 59 minutes behind 29th place Eric Kelly. If you are wondering how much the winners of the Iditarod win you would be surprised to learn the Prize Purse is 500,000 with the top 20 finishers in the money receiving diminishing amounts based on standings with anyone who finishes 21st or later is awarded $1,024 which after 9-10 days of misery racing on the trail means that mushers are not motivated by money in entering the race.
