Noted Holidays: National PTA
Founders Day: Celebrating the first meeting of the National Congress of
Mothers (the precursor of the National PTA) co-founded by Alice McLellan Birney
and Phoebe Apperson Hearst in which over 2,000 people attended to promote and
advocate for the education, health, and safety of children, youth, and
families. Selena Sloan Butler saw the same need for segregated school children and
founded the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers in 1926 which
merged with the National PTA on June 22, 1970 and continues today as the oldest
volunteer serving organization promoting the education and welfare of school children.

K. Preston, a disgruntled Army private, buzzed the White House in a stolen
helicopter which he hoped would demonstrate his flying skills and returned after
being chased by planes to enter White House airspace again to be shot and land the helicopter and be arrested. He
was court martialed, sentenced to 1 year six months of which he had already
served and fined $2400. He received a general discharge, lived a quiet life and
died of cancer in 1990.
3. 1980—The first ascent of Mt. Everest during the winter
