February 1, 2023 Ridley's Believe It Or Not

At Tyre Nichols Celebration of Life, Al Sharpton who is an expected attendee when a black has been killed by a white police officer was present who claimed that if Tyre had been white, he would not have been beaten to death by the 5 black officers (should blacks paint themselves white when in neighborhoods where the police force has been integrated?).  First mega Blue donor Bankman-Fried discovered $38  donated to Blue candidates would not prevent his arrest for securities fraud dwarfing Maddow’s Ponzi scheme and now we learn that long time lawyer and Blue megadonor
Tom Girardi has been charged with embezzling $18 million from clients. In a scary news item, it has been revealed that the highest increase in deaths from fentanyl is in children 1-4 of drug users. I hope you enjoy today’s Ridley's Believe It Or Not  and find it worthy to read and if not reply “Unsubscribe” to be removed.
Ridley’s Believe It Or Not February 1, 2023
Noted Holidays: National Girls and Women in Sports Day,  created by President Reagan in 1987 as National Women in Sports Day and expanded to include girls in 1989 and celebrated on the first Wednesday in February. The celebrates the contribution of girls and women in sports but may be under attack as leftist Woke forces want to allow boys and men who “identify” as females to participate in women’s sports which their higher muscle mass and larger organs give them a tremendous advantage and end the advances made under Title IX.
Word of the Day: The word of the day is “aestival” which means of or pertaining to summer which for many of us under winter storm warnings describes the days we are looking forward to enjoying .
Number 1 Song of the Day: The number 1 song on this day in 1971 was “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison on a run of 3 weeks following a run of 1 week in the end of December 1970  to share with 18 other acts achieving number 1 status, while 18 acts achieved their first number 1 song including Janis Joplin who became the 2nd artist to achieve number 1 status posthumously.  Here is a recording with lyrics of George Harrison recording “My Sweet Lord”:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04v-SdKeEpE
Noted Birthdays: Brandon Lee,  the son of actor and martial arts star Bruce Lee was born on this day in 1965 in Oakland, California and pursued an acting/martial career like his father. His career was just starting to take off when he landed a leading role in The Crow and in an incident that Alec Baldwin would in 2021 ape was shot when a bullet in an earlier scene had not exited when the gun misfired. When the gun loaded with blanks was fired at him it propelled the bullet to strike a major artery that caused his death on March 31,1993 with only 8 days shooting left to finish the movie with Brandon needing to be in 3 scenes. Thanks to stand-ins and CGI the movie was completed and released in 1994 to gross over $50 million in the U.S. after spending $23 million to produce it.
Notable Events that occurred on February 1:
          1.     1960—In a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement in Greensboro, North Carolina, Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair, Jr., and David Richmond all  black students at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University sat down at the whites only lunch counter at F.W. Woolworths and were refused service and refused to leave until the store closed. The next day the number of students increased to 20, then to 60 and the sit down movement coupled with boycotts of segregated stores started spreading across the country. F.W. Woolworths continued its segregation policy until the passage of the 1965 Civil Rights Act but in Greensboro the store manager after suffering losses of $200,000 and having his salary reduced on July 25,1960 ordered 4 black employees to remove their work uniforms and sit down at the lunch counter to be served.
          2.     1968—The New York Railroad merged into the Pennsylvania Railroad to become Penn Central Transportation which sadly filed for bankruptcy protection some two years later.
          3.     2003—Returning from a successful mission and unaware that some heat shield tiles has been damaged on takeoff, Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated on reentry into the atmosphere, killing all 7 astronauts aboard.
          4.     2004—During the stoning ritual during the Hajj at Mina, 251 pilgrims were crushed to death in a stampede and 244 were injured.
          5.     2012—In sportsmanship be damned, thousands of supporters of the soccer team Al Masry, in the Port Said Stadium after beating Al Ahly 3-1 stormed the outnumbered Al Ahly section to kill 74 fans and injure 500 (on can barely imagine the carnage if Al Masry had lost.
          Quotes of the Day:
In an interview just prior to his death, Lee quoted a passage from Paul Bowles book The Sheltering Sky he had chosen for his wedding invitations for a wedding that now would never occur; it is now inscribed on his tombstone: “Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. And yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, or five times more? Perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless..”
