Tim Walz is touting his 24 years of service in the National Guard
But sadly embellishing his record so voters will hold him in higher regard
Trying to rebrand a career of training 1 weekend a month and each summer 2 weeks
As he achieved the highest rank an enlisted man in the Army could seek
Command master sergeant in command of a battalion of some 500 men requiring strong leaders not those too meek
24 years of responding to natural disasters like floods, blizzards and tornadoes in the Land of 10,000 Lakes death and destruction
After 9/11 support and combat units in and out of Iraq and Afghanistan were deployed hopefully prepared with their hours of instruction
Walz was deployed not in Iraq but in Italy safe from harm's way
Did not join the almost 7,000 casualties and 482 the Iraqis and Afghans found ways to slay
Walz's deployment came to an end and to the U.S. he returned
He would resign once another deployment to Iraq he learned
Failed to complete his training and was to the rank of master sergeant reduced
Concealed the reduction confident his 24 years and impression he was in combat would give his Congressional campaign a boost
Looking out for himself first and foremost leaving those under him to hang to dry
Could care less that some of the soldiers he used to command would be wounded or die
He is not the first veteran to embellish his military record to try to further his political or business career
But thank God too often the cracks in the embellishment attempts soon appear
In re Kerry who in 4 months in Vietnam received a Silver and Bronze Star and 3 Purple Hearts
2 of which were mere scratches but was his ticket to from Vietnam quickly depart
When he ran for President in 2004 appearing at the DNC assuring the delegate he was reporting for duty to then salute
Fellow Swift Boat sailors who served with him to descriptions of his medals and wounds refutee
I re Dukakis who served in Korea during 1957-1959
And was leading Bush for a good part of the time
Against the advice advisers Dukakis wanted to show he had more military smarts than H.W. Bush, a World War II vet
Prepared a photo op of him driving an M-1 Abrahams which he would forever regret
Dukakis looked like Mad' Alred E. Newman of "What Me Worry" fame
Quickly ridiculed 24/7 he lost in a landslide as his campaign went down in flames
