11
mushers are still on the course with 7 out of White Mountain (77 miles from
Nome) heading for Safety, the last
checkpoint and 18 miles out of Nome with the husband and wife duo Jeff and
KattiJo Deeter in 34th and 35th leaving at the same time
and who are out of Elim 123 miles out of Nome with Yuka Honda in 42nd
place from Japan in her second Iditarod leading the last place musher Apayaug
Reitan by only 53 minutes. Depending on how much rest time the dogs and mushers
need in White Mountain the last 4 may have to endure tomorrow night to go with
tonight before the race can come to an end. The number of mushers who dropped
out remains at 5 and with those still on the course so much closer to Nome, it
is probably very unlikely barring injury that any more will drop out.
