A good friend and fellow poet Tricia Knoll sent me a photo a Zebra caterpillar on a milkweed leaf
that led to this poem:
I have seen
Zebras on the African plains
Bounding free fearless in the territory in which the lion and jackals reign
I have seen
two legged Zebras armed with flags
Ready to toss
at a moment’s notice if respect for the rules lag
But a Zebra on a milkweed hoping to one day into the sky
leave
Is a moment of art to with joy perceive
From that lowly crawler who spins a cocoon
A monarch of the sky will appear soon
We humans may be at the top of the food chain
Somewhat ignorant of nature's inspiring refrain
An image for those struggling, out of
their luck in despair
What is possible when you break free
with wings of beauty and soar into the air
