Thanksgiving Day Thoughts 2020

 

THANKSGIVING DAY 2020

We are a nation that built the Panama Canal, was key to winning two World Wars
Sent men to land on the Moon after into the heavens soar
Built the ALCAN Highway through muskeg and frigid waste
And better yet have presidents pardon turkeys we on this day would otherwise baste
This may be the year where our holidays and lifestyles have been curtailed
And the number of infected or dead fellow Americans is beyond the pale
Instead of extended family and friends at the dinner table a number so reduced
Sacrifices to prevent an invisible enemy from continuing to run loose
Instead the joys of not having to fight the crowds late Thursday weighed down with tryptophan
As in the past Black Friday frenzy earlier and earlier with fighting shoppers swarmed across the land
Soon the start of a Christmas season to be shorn of endless parties
To trudge through full parking lots or to a shopping computer be chained after a round of libations hearty
For once a time to on the true reasons of Thanksgiving and then Christmas to reflect
On that what we should be thankful for instead of fears of a virus to infect
The list may be shorter this year but for most still very long
A reminder to help our less fortunate try to get along
Nearing Christmas to look forward to the message of Peace on Earth
A gift Amazon cannot even come close to surpassing in worth
So today when in the company of friends and family real time or virtual enjoy and bask
Secure in the thoughts like when facing life you are up to the carving of the turkey task
As you devour your servings and ask for more
Know that your blessing multiply by the score
This scourge will upon this nation soon fade away
Another reason to be thankful on this Thanksgiving Day
