Ridley's Believe it Or Not July 30, 2023

On the disastrous Defund the Police Movement, E-Bay founder and billionaire Pierre Omidyar who has funded $1.8 million to groups advocating defunding the police also hypocritically has been a heavy investor of private security firms. Portland State University who disarmed its police force 3 years ago finally is being hit with reality and quietly rearming them given the crime in Portland (who would want to be a cop armed with only a radio and nightstick and possibly a taser when the felons are armed)? Red Rep Nancy Mace is warning her fellow Reds to tread carefully on the issue of impeachment to be absolutely sure the facts of Biden’s criminality can be established by credible witnesses or risk losing their hard fought majority. Hunter’s business partner will be testifying before the House and Reds are hoping his testimony will link Biden to bribery payments made by Burisma to remove a prosecutor. Trump is once again blasting Smith’s latest accusation that surveillance tapes at Mir-A-Lago were deleted. Delta Airlines is in hot water for on a nine hour flight to Athens from JFK serving at least 10 vodkas and a glass of wine to an intoxicated male who tried to sexually abuse a mom and her 16 year old daughter while flight attendants did nothing other than serve him more alcohol:  (https://alaskanpoet.blogspot.com/2023/07/news-flash-top-delta-airlines-keep-on.html). Jason Aldean, the latest target of the counter culture warriors had his concert venue evacuated and concert delayed due to a severe weather alert in Mansfield, Massachusetts but his show after a 2 hour some delay did go on. Italy has banned transgenders from entering the Miss Italy Contest so in protest 100 men have submitted entries (like the uproar in allowing transgenders to compete in female sports this could be solved by having a Miss and Trans Contest with few if any viewers wanting to view or appear in person to see. Trump is supposedly livid over “Only in America” being the theme song of the Lincoln Event Dinner in because of the lyrics : "One kid dreams of fame and fortune, One kid helps pay the rent, One could end up going to prison, One just might be president, Only in America, Dreamin' in red white and blue, Only in America, Where we dream as big as we want to." Trump should chill out as should the social media critics who are conflating president with prison not the  same person. If the music chosen had been the theme for Cops: “Bad boys, whatcha want, Watcha want, whatcha gonna do? When sheriff John Brown come for you’ Tell me whatcha wanna do, whatcha gonna do” he and the critics would have been justified.

Noted Holidays: National Whistle Blower Appreciation Day Created by the  U.S. Senate on this day in 2013 and on this day celebrated since then to commemorate the passage of the first whistleblower act passed unanimously by the Continental Congress on this day in 1978 to protect 10 sailors and marines who had earlier exposed fraud and corruption to the detriment of the government. Hunter Biden’s illegal activity would not have been exposed without the whistleblowers in the IRS coming forward.

              1.     On this day in 2020 an Atlas V Rocket was launched from the Cape Canaveral Space Station/To search the Martian landscape for evidence of past habitation/With a land rover Perseverance and a small helicopter to fly in the thin Martian air/ Already outlived the mission by 2 years still sending data looking for bio material to support a colony there.
              2.     On this day in 1974 after before SCOTUS losing his case/President Nixon turned over his office recording tapes he should have destroyed or erased/The plotting of using the CIA to obstruction justice was now available for all to hear/ Impeachment and the need to resign was becoming very near/A young lawyer on the Senate Subcommittee investigating impeachment who learned a lesson was HRC/ When her private email server was discovered she ordered all cell phones smashed and BleachBit on the server used to try to make it impossible to the emails see.
              3.     On this day in 1965 to the joy of seniors facing crippling medical bills/Often having to postpone or defer treatment from diseases that would kill/ President Johnson signed the 1965 Social Security Act creating Medicaid and Medicare/Programs that those still under 65 now worry if in the future funds for their care will still be there.
             4.      On this day in 1945 after delivering to Tinian the Little Boy atomic bomb that with the second one Fat Bay would end the war/ The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was heading to Manilla after completing that chore/When it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine I-58/300 seamen killed and 880 went into the water in the 12 minutes before it sank/The men hoping the Navy would soon know it was late and searchers the men would soon thank/In a major oops moment the Navy for 3 ½ days did not know it was late/ And worse that it hit with torpedo’s sinking fate/Attacked by sharks and dehydration the men in the water began to die/ By the luck of a routine patrol of a PBY/ 316 men in the water still alive were saved/Highest number of sailors of a lost ship in WWII that went to watery graves.
            5.      On this day in 1916 on the Black Tom Island docks/ 2000 tons of small arms ammunition and 50 tons of explosives were in trains and barges waiting to loaded on ships to help Russia the Germans block/When German agents planted bombs that caused the munitions to explode and $20 million in munitions destroy/ As a neutral nation with an FBI of only 216 agents to deploy/Lulled by our Atlantic Ocean moat/Not until quick passage after the fact of the Espionage Act did we our national security begin to promote.
Famous Quote on the Sinking of the USS Indianapolis:
Doug Stanton, In Harm's Way: The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Story of Its Survivors:For the survivors, the disaster of the Indy is their My Lai massacre or Watergate, a touchstone moment of historic disappointment: the navy put them in harm's way, hundreds of men died violently, and then the government refused to acknowledge its culpability.

What's amazing, however, is that these men, unlike contemporary generations who've been disappointed by bad government, are not bitter. Somehow, a majority brushed aside their feelings of rancor and went on to help build the booming postwar American economy of the fifties.
