December 19, 2022 Ridley's Believe It Or Not

In the World Cup Finals on Sunday Argentina beat France 4-2 penalty kicks after the game ended in a n tie in regulation to deprive France of back to back titles. Croatia in the Consolation Game beat Morocco 2-1 on Saturday for third place. While the streets quickly filled in Buenos Aires after Gonzalo Montiel kicked a penalty kick to with the game, an Argentinian woman in the Qatar stadium got carried away and went topless to be led away by Qatar police to face possible jail time. The U.S., Canada, and Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup so hopefully by then the U.S. will be able to start scoring more goals to have a chance to advance into the final 4. Hope you enjoy today’s Ridley's Believe It Or Not  and find it worthy to read and if not reply “Unsubscribe” to be removed.
Ridley’s Believe It Or Not December 19, 2022
Noted Holiday: First Day of Hanukah, a eight day celebration commemorating the rededication and purification of the Second Temple of Jerusalem after the Syrians had occupied it for two years and permitted only the worship of Greek gods. According to Jewish law, the purification had to be performed with a menorah burning for 8 days but it their case they had only enough oil for 1 days burning but a miracle occurred, and the oil lasted for 8 days to purify  the temple.
Word of the Day: The word of the day is “acescence” which means to become sour which describes what happens to milk left in the refrigerator too long.
Number 1 Song of the Day: The number 1 song on this day in 2000 was “Independent Woman” by Destiny’s Child on a run of 7 weeks  to share with 17 other songs achieving number 1 status while 10 acts achieved their first number 1 song. Here is a music video with lyrics of Destiny’s Child “Independent Woman”:

Noted Birthdays: Jason “Jake The Snake” Plumer, born on this day in 1974, a former quarterback with the Arizona Sun Devils who played 10 year is the NFL and acquired his nickname for his proclivity in slithering out of potential sack situations by  defenses and who now is a functional mushroom grower.
Notable Events that occurred on December 19
          1.       1912 William Van Schaick, the Captain of the steamship William Slocum which had been chartered on June 4, 1904 by St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Little Germany district of Manhattan to go on their annual rite to cruise up the East River and then across Long Island Sound to Locust Grove, a picnic site on Long Island, was pardoned by President Taft and released from prison after serving 3 ½ year of a ten year sentence for dereliction of duty when a fire broke out soon after departure that quickly engulfed the ship carrying 1358 passengers and 30 crew, causing 958 deaths and 180 injuries.
          2.       1984—The Sino-British Joint Declaration stating that China would regain sovereignty over Hong Kong and the United Kingdom would restore Hong Kong to China subject to rights of autonomy of Hong Kong other than foreign policy and defense to be effective July 1, 1997 was signed in Beijing by Deng Xiaoping and Margaret Thatcher. As might be expected China severely limited Hong Kong’s autonomy and considers the treaty to now be null and void.
          3.       1998—President Bill Clinton was impeached for perjury but was  acquitted in the Senate with all Democrats voting not guilty.
          4.       2001—Massive riots broke out in Buenos Aires and other large Argentine cities over rising inflation and the pegging of the Argentine peso to the dollar which caused the deaths of 39 civilians and resulted in the resignation of the President of Argentina.
          5.       2016—Anis Amri, an Tunisian denied asylum 4 days earlier, car jacked a semi-trailer truck, killing the driver and then ploughed into an outdoor Christmas market in Berlin, killing 13 shoppers and injuring 44 others and managed to escape from the scene but was approached by police in Milan, asking for his identification papers whom he shot and wounded one and was then shot and killed by the other.
Quote of the Day: Margaret Thatcher in a speech at the signing of the Sino-British Joint Resolution on Hong Kong: “The Agreement fully meets the political requirements of Britain and China, as well as the interests of the Hong Kong people. It provides a framework in which, as a Special Administrative Region of the Peoples Republic of China, Hong Kong will maintain its economic systems and way of life for fifty years after 1 July 1997. It gives Hong Kong a high degree of autonomy. Hong Kong people will administer Hong Kong and the Special Administrative Region will pass its own legislation.
It allows Hong Kong to continue to decide its own economic, financial and trade policies and to participate as appropriate in international organizations and agreements. It preserves Hong Kong's familiar legal system and the rights and freedoms enjoyed there.
In short, it provides the assurances for the future which Hong Kong needs in order to continue to play its unique role in the world as a trading and financial centre.” Great words to go with great hopes but sadly in dealing with the CCP it sounds more like Neville Chamberlain’s waiving Hitler’s signature to the Munich Sudetenland Agreement and pronouncing “Peace in Our Times.”
