Noted Holiday: Ice Cream
Day, not to be confused with National Ice Cream Day which is held on the third
Sunday in July which President Reagan designated as National Ice Cream Month in
1984 and which this poet is clueless who or when it was created but it still
honors the treat kids scream for and a president today for will never pass up
an opportunity to enjoy. It predecessors can be trace back to Roman times when
Rome brought back mounds of snow packed in straw to delay melting and then flavor
it with juices and fruit and to Marco Polo who brought back with him a recipe
that closely resembles sherbet.

the Day: The word of the day is “accoy” which means to pacify or subdue
which describes to a tee what conquerors of Afghanistan have failed to
accomplish which may also prove to be the case with the Taliban and their
ruthless sharia which among other failings destroys women’s education and
ability to contribute to society and the economy.

1. 1636—The Massachusetts Bay Colony
established 3 regiments of militia to defend the colony against Pequot Indians
which many consider to mark the formation our National Guard.

1937—Nanjing, the capital of the Republic of China defended by Chinese forces
under the command of General Tang Shengzhi, fell the Japanese Army who
unleashed a 6 week long wave of barbarity previously unknown in terms of its severity
which became known as the Rape of Nanking in which some 200,000 Chinese
civilians and Chinese prisoner of war were executed and some 20,000 women were
raped.
3.
1972—Edward Cernan and Harrison Schmitt began their 3rd and last EVA
exploration of the lunar surface becoming the last humans to date to be on the
surface of the Moon.
4. 1977—Indiana Flight 216 en route to
Nashville International Airport crashed almost immediately after takeoff from
Evansville Regional Airport, killing all 29 aboard which consisted of the crew,
the Evansville College Basketball Team, other than freshman David Fur who was
not on the plane due to an ankle injury, support staff and boosters. David Fur
and his brother were killed in an automobile accident 2 weeks later.
5. 2003—In Operation Red Dawn, U.S. forces
captured Saddam Hussein hiding in a spider hole in the village of ad-Dawr near
Tikrit, Iraq.
