Ridley’s Believe It Or Not January 23, 2023
Noted Holidays: National Handwriting
Day Created on this day in 1977, the anniversary of the birth of the
writer of the most iconic signature in American history-John Hancock-to promote
handwriting which given the use of computers and texting is probably a dying
skill.
Word
of the Day: The word of the day is “adventitious” which means
occurring by chance or by accident which describes the occurrence of a good
number of scientific discoveries like penicillin or in hopefully the Trump,
Pence and Biden classified documents scandals.
Number 1 Song of the Day: The
number 1 song on this day in 1978 was “Baby Come Back” by Player on a run of 3
weeks to share with 21 other songs achieving number 1 status, while 11 acts
achieved their first number 1 song. Here is a music video of Player performing
“Baby Come Back”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn-enjcgV1o
Noted Birthdays: Michael Brim,
noted NFL cornerback born on this day in 1996 who played 8 years in the NFL
ending his career with the Cincinnati Bengals and who proved that no matter how
good, a cornerback cannot tackle a bullet as he was killed in a shootout in an
argument involving a woman on April 19, 2005.
Notable Events that occurred on
January 23:
1. 1945—German
Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz implemented the beginning of the 15 week evacuation
of military forces and civilians to Germany and Denmark which resulted in the successful
evacuation of 800-900,000 civilians and 350,000 military personnel at the cost
of over 160 military vessels in the largest military evacuation in history that dwarfed the British evacuation from the Dunkirk beaches.
2. 1968 in a
flagrant act of war that LBJ failed to respond to North Korea seized the USS Pueblo
in International Waters and held the officers and crew hostage subject to
abuse and torture and only after the U.S. “admitted it was spying, apologized
and promised not to spy again” did the North Koreans release the officers and
crew less the member who had been killed during the seizure (sad day for the US
Navy and American prestige.
3. 1986—The Rock
and Roll of Fame inducted its first members: Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Ray
Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee
Lewis and Elvis Presley. The absence of any women was rectified on January 3, 1987
when “The Lady of Soul" Aretha Franklin was inducted.
4. 2002—Stanford graduate
and journalist Danial Pearl was kidnapped on this day by Islamist terrorists
while he was in Pakistan investigating the link of the “Shoe Bomber” to terrorist
training camps in Pakistan and was beheaded on video on February 1, 2022
leaving a wife and son born 4 months after his death.
5.
2018—As part of a growing trade
war with China and frustration with their proclivity to steal our intellectual
property, President Trump announced the levy of tariffs on solar panels and
washing machines (if we are going to discontinue fossil fuels like natural gas
which we are blessed with, we have to expand our production of products and
materials needed to produce renewable energy).
Quote of the Day: Mitchell Lerner,
Ohio State historian and Korean expert: “The Pueblo was a good symbol of
America's Cold War myopia. (The crew members) were sent out there because the
U.S. military said the Soviets run similar operations against us and we accept
it and they accept it and no one ever said, 'Wait a minute, you're sending this
ship to North Korea. That's not the Soviets.' "
