January 21:
1. 1968—A
B-52 armed with 4 1.1 megaton H-bombs crashed near Thule Air Force Base in
Greenland after the crew bailed out to a cabin fire and smoke, rupturing some
of the bombs, one of which was never recovered.

Earth became a smaller planet as the Concorde began commercial service on
its London-Bahrain and Paris-Rio Di Janeiro routes.
3. 1999—The U.S.
Coast Guard in its largest drug seizure to date intercepted a ship with 9500
pounds of cocaine aboard it heading for the U.S.
4. 2004—NASA’s Mars Rover
Spirit which had landed on the surface of Mars on January 4, 2004 stopped
communicating with Earth due to management of its flash memory which was
repaired remotely from Earth on February 6 enabling Spirit to conduct
Martian surface exploration until May 1, 2009 when it became stuck in the Martian
soft sand and despite efforts to free itself attempted from Earth until January
26, 2010. All communications with Earth ended on March 22, 2010.
5.
2017—Women’s protest marches were
held in 400 American cities and 160 countries worldwide over the inauguration
of Donald Trump.
Quote of the Day: Stephen Schwartz,
noted contributor and fellow to The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists: “The fire aboard the B-52G was caused by human and
mechanical error. A crewmember stuffed four foam rubber cushions beneath a seat
on top of a heating vent. When the heat was turned up hours later, a heater
malfunction ignited them, filling the cabin with flames and thick smoke. Six
crew bailed out and survived, although two navigators were injured. A second
pilot died trying to bail out. The next day, SAC removed all nuclear weapons
from airborne alert aircraft. An extensive, nearly eight-month cleanup
effort—dubbed “Dr. Freezelove”—collected, packaged and transported 10,500 tons
(237,000 cubic feet) of contaminated snow, ice, and debris to the Atomic Energy
Commission’s Savannah River Plant in South Carolina for burial. In 2015, the BBC broadcast
an interview with Jens Zinglersen, a Dane who managed supplies at Thule Air
Base, witnessed the catastrophic crash, and was the first person on the scene.
(CAVEAT: Despite rumors, there is no missing H-bomb beneath the ice.) What was
reportedly never recovered was the U-235 "spark plug" from one bomb.
That's only part of the thermonuclear secondary (albeit the most important
part).”
