Not The Size Of The Dog But The Size Of The Heart

Once a Marine always a Marine imbued with the spirit of Semper Fi
If attacked no matter the time from the Corps fighting to the end is how he or she will die
That creed has been a given since the shores of Tripoli
A branch of our military awash in courage and esprit
No matter the odds it is unlikely that a Marine will flee
Little did we know a Marine’s dog when it comes to courage has it in the same degree
66 year old Larry Yapez a Purple Hearted Marine from wounds in Vietnam
In the early morning hours near to Yosemite found himself in a firefight of a black bears paws  and arms
If to the struggle a Marine was to give up and quit
A trip to his porch the coroner to admit
His faithful 10 pound terrier Benji joined the fray
200 pound black bears not used to such suicidal display
Turned to Benji, the brave dog, to swat
Time for Marine and canine to retreat inside his house at double trot
Just another example of man’s best friend
Doing the impossible to prevent his master’s life from coming to an end
Semper Fi little canine Benji, an ursine bane
May you find a place in the canine Hall of Fame
