May 18, 2023 Ridley's Believe It Or Not

It would be very rare to find a police officer in our cities who does not condemn George Soros’ funding D.A.’s believed to be soft on crime and hard for catch and release with cashless bail; Musk amplified the charge claiming Soros hates humanity and compares him to Jewish supervillain Magneto prompting a wave of antisemitic charges against him. Texas has sent its first load of illegal aliens to Denver, a sanctuary city as Texas border towns are being overwhelmed by illegals seeking most bogus asylum claims. SCOTUS ruled that Section 230 prevented the family of an American killed in Paris by a terrorist attack from suing Google alleging that the terrorists were radicalized by YouTube videos. Real estate investor Sam Zell aka “the grave dancer” for his proclivity of buy depressed properties during market turndowns to become a billionaire with a net worth of $5.3 billion has just died at age 81. In the DeSantis versus Disney war, the mouse has roared back and cancelled its planned $1 billion campus in Florida which would have also resulted in the relocating of 2,000 highly paid workers. Cleveland Brown’s legendary running back Jim Brown has died and the Lakers lost to the Nuggets 108-103 to go 0-2 in a game best remembered by LeBron James on a breakaway with no Nugget near him fumbling a show boat dunk out of bounds. The Celtics down 0-1 to the Heat play Game 2 on Friday.

Noted Holidays: National AIDS Vaccine Awareness Day: Created by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and first celebrated on this day in 1998, the anniversary of Bill Clinton’s commencement address to the graduating students at Morgan State University where he urged the development of a vaccine to prevent AIDS. While the fear of AIDS and the infection of celebrities like Rock Hudson and Magic Johnson have caused the new infection rate to decline, over 30,000 new cases of HIV infection occur annually in the U.S. which make the development of a vaccine especially for use in third world countries a worthwhile goal.
Word of the Day: the word of the day is “anile”  which means senile or imbecilic which many Blues are concerned that Senator Feinstein has become as they are urging her to resign before her term ends on December 31, 2024.
Number 1 Song: The number 1 song on this day in 1989 was “I’ll Be There For You”  on a run of 1 week to share with 31 other songs achieving number 1 ranking, while 12 acts, including Sinéad  O'Connor  achieved their first number 1 ranking. Here is a music video with lyrics of Bon Jovi  performing “I’ll Be There For You”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh8MIp2FOhc
May 18 Famous Birthdays: Tina Fey, noted actress, comedian, and head writer for Saturday Night Live from 1997 to 2006 was born on this day in 1970. She is probably best remembered for her portrayal of Sarah Palin and is probably moping since Palin lost her 2022 attempt to be elected to the House of Representatives from Alaska.
            Noted Events on May 18:
             1.  1933—FDR signed legislation to create the Tennessee Valley Authority to provide flood control and electric power to some 10 million customers in Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Kentucky and small parts of Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. Unlike many agencies of the federal government like the Postal Service or Amtrak, the TVA is self-supporting and receives no taxpayer dollars.
             2.  1974—The world was not smiling as India under its Project Smiling Buddha detonated a nuclear weapon to become the 6th nation so armed and prompting Pakistan to develop its own nuclear weapons.
             3.  1980—The Pacific Northwest lived up to its classification of being located on the Rim of Fire as Mt. St. Helens volcano in Washington erupted, killing 57 people and causing some $3 billion in damages and spewing large quantities of volcanic ash to coat the hundreds of miles down wind of the eruption.
            4.   2018—Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a student at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas which had 2 armed police on campus, entered the Art Complex armed with a shotgun and revolver and started shooting, killing 8 students and 2 teachers while wounding 13 including one of the police officers critically. He was injured in the shootout with the officers and surrendered. He was arrested for murder and attempted murder and assault with a  deadly weapon but found mentally not fit to stand trial and has been confined to a state mental institution since 2019 with reevaluations yearly to see if he would be mentally fit to stand trial. As to motives, it has been alleged he was subject to being bullied by his classmates.
            5.   2019—Joe Biden joined a crowded field of Blue presidential hopefuls as he announced his campaign for President of the United States.
Famous Quotes on Events and Issues:
Ronald Reagan on the volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens:  I have flown twice over Mount St. Helens. I'm not a scientist and I don't know the figures, but I have a suspicion that one little mountain out there, in these last several months, has probably released more sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere than has been released in the last ten years of automobile driving or things of that kind.
