1. Evacuation Day (Suffolk County Massachusetts)—celebrating the evacuation by General Howe of British forces from Boston on this day in 1776.

5. Gates Of Addiction Day—celebrating
the birthday on this day in 1976 of Stephen Gately, the Irish pop singer and
lead vocalist of the band Boyzone who unfortunately battled addiction most of
his life; he died at a far too early age of 33.
On this day ina. 1780 General Washington granted the Continental Army a holiday as “an act of solidarity with the Irish in their fight for independence.”
b. 1941 President Roosevelt formally opened the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
c. 1958 in a if-at-first-you-do-not-succeed-try-again moment, after the first Vanguard launch exploded four feet off the ground on live television, Vanguard I, the first solar powered satellite, was successfully launched and is still in orbit although contact with it was lost in 1964.
d. 1973 the Pulitzer Prize photo Burst of Joy, symbolizing the relief over the end of American involvement in the Vietnam War was taken.
e. 1992
in South Africa a referendum to end apartheid was passed by a 68.7% to 31.3%
vote.
