Ridley's Believe It Or Not March 13 History Good Samaritan Involvement Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not—March 13, 2015 Trust you are not a friggatriskaidekaphobiac and your Friday will be free of spilled salt and black cats. In the lead at the Huslia checkpoint on the Yukon 478 miles from the start with less than a 2 minute lead is Aaron Burmeister over Dallas Seavey the 2014 Iditarod winner. Aliy Zirkle fifth yesterday has dropped to twelfth; DeeDee Jenrove, the youthful 61 year old who has raced the Iditarod 33 times has climbed back into eighth and Cindy Abbott has climbed up to 74th. Note the melting pot of black, white and brown all working together in a common goal—if canines can do it, we mere mortal humans ought to rise to the task.

       1. National K-9 Veterans Day—commemorating the excellent service of federal, state, and local police dogs who daily work with their noses and jaws to keep us humans safe.
       2. Good Samaritan Involvement Day—commemorating the need of good Samaritans to get involved when their fellow human beings find themselves at risk; the day bemoans the failure of 38 people on this day in 1964 in a New York City apartment building who watched for 30 minutes Kitty Genovese being chased and stabbed to death yet not wanting to get involved did nothing including something so simple as calling the police.
       3. 1980 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song on this day in 1980, as part of a 4 week run Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen, a British rock band formed in 1970 with Freddie Mercury, who died from Aids, as the lead vocalist. The band sold more than 150 million records.
        4. National Coconut Torte Day—great desert is a phase that says it all to describe this tasty treat.
        5. Life Is Not Always Peaches And Cream Day—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1989 of Peaches Geldof, journalist, model and actress whose father founded Live Aid and who died way too soon of a heroin overdose at the age of 25.
On this day in
     a. 1865 in a little too late moment, the Confederacy authorized the use of African American troops.
     b. 1933 banks in the U.S. began to reopen after President Roosevelt had previously declared a bank holiday.
     c. 1963 police in Phoenix, Arizona arrested Ernesto Miranda for kidnapping and rape and obtained a confession from him after two hours of interrogation; his confession was overturned by the United States Supreme Court which is why we now have the Miranda Warning that must be given by police to anyone placed in custody.
     d. 1991 the Justice Department announced that Exxon had agreed to pay $1 billion to clean up the damage caused by the oil spill of the Exxon Valdez caused by its running aground after leaving Valdez, Alaska.
     e. 2013 Pope Francis was elected as the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church.
Reflections on being a Good Samaritan: “On the parable of the Good Samaritan: "I imagine that the first question the priest and Levite asked was: 'If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But by the very nature of his concern, the good Samaritan reversed the question: 'If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?” Martin Luther King, Jr. Wise and caring thoughts!
