Ridley's Believe It Or Not March 8 History International Women's Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not—March 8, 2015 Trust your weekend is off to a great start though shorted by one hour as we started daylight savings time on Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m. and you are anxiously awaiting the start of the start of the Iditarod in 1 day (when it starts properly befitting my Alaskan heritage and homage to the Last Great Race on Earth I will post daily race standings). As always, I  hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids of interest and a relevant quote from Emma Watson with a smile on your face, enjoying a few peanut clusters, blessed  with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient.  You need only contact me for details.
       1. International Women’s Day—commemorating the struggle for women’s equality, especially in countries under the yoke of Sharia that really represses women.
       2. Check Your Batteries Daycoinciding with the start of Daylight Savings Time as an easy day to remember that it is time to check the batteries in the smoke detector and monoxide detectors in one’s house as it is a great way to save one’s life in the event of an emergency.
       3. 1976 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song on this day in 1976, as part of a 3 week run December, 1963 (Oh What a Night) by the Four Seasons, a band viewed by many as the best band before the Beatles and a band that has sold over 100 million records.
        4. National Peanut Cluster Day—although this poet prefers almond clusters, this tasty treat of peanuts covered in chocolate is not too shabby.
        5. Roots of Obesity Day—commemorating one of the major causes of obesity among our youth—the lack of exercise due to spending too much time playing video games—the birthday on this day in 1922 of Ralph H. Baer known as the “Father of Video Games” who like Einstein escaped Germany.
On this day in
     a. 1655 John Casor had the misfortune of being the first person to be declared a slave in North America in a case in which a crime had not been committed.
     b. 1775 an anonymous writer believed to be Thomas Paine published an article “African Slavery in America” which called for the abolition of slavery.
     c. 1817 the New York Stock Exchange was founded.
     d. 1917 the U.S. Senate votes to limit filibusters by adopting the cloture rule which is why even though the Reds control the Senate, they do not have 60 seats and the Blues can block any legislation.
     e. 2014 Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing disappeared and still after a year of extensive searching in the Indian Ocean no trace of wreckage has been found
Reflections on this International Women’s Day: "The saddest thing a girl can do is to dumb herself down for a guy.” Emma Watson, English actress who appeared in all eight Harry Potter films Very astute observation by someone only 24 years old. The Ridley corollary would be: “The dumbest thing a guy could do would be to not appreciate a girl for her intelligence as it lasts a lot longer than beauty.”
