Ridley's Believe It Or Not June 23 History National Pecan Sandies Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—June 23, 2014:  Third day of summer and another veritable wasteland of holidays to enjoy. Hope you are in full summer enjoyment mode and enjoy these holidays, factoids, and a quote by Martina Navratilova on women in athletics.
            1. United Nations Public Service Day—another UN observance since 2003 to honor and promote public service—great idea if it is public service and not public career.
            2. International Day Of Widows—another UN observance since 2005 to call attention to the poverty and suffering over 250 women who have lost their husbands.
           3. Pink Flamingo Day—celebrating since 2007 not those elegant pink flamingos you see in Florida or on parade at Sea World but the plastic pink ones used to decorate lawns and created by Don Featherstone.
           4. National Pecan Sandies Day—celebrating not the efforts of those brushing the sand off the pecans dropped on the beach but rather an outstanding cookie worthy of not and eating.
On this day in:
            a. 1926 to the sweaty palms of high school seniors wanting to get into college, the College Board administered the first SAT exam.
            b. 1969 IBM announced that it would price its software separately from its hardware devices, thereby creating the modern software industry that has made so many people huge fortunes.
            c. 1972 Title IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was amended to prohibit sexual discrimination in any educational programs receiving federal funds thereby creating a full range of women’s sports that few watch and lose money but are supported by college football and in some cases college basketball.
The world is a better place with women on the playing fields, courts and diamonds: “People in the States used to think that if girls were good at sports their sexuality would be affected. Being feminine meant being a cheerleader, not being an athlete. The image of women is changing now. You don't have to be pretty for people to come and see you play. At the same, if you're a good athlete, it doesn't mean you're not a woman." - Martina Navratilova, great professional tennis player
