June 21 History Summer Solstice

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—June 21, 2014:  First day of summer to enjoy along with the holidays, factoids, and a quote by David John on Baby Boomers beginning to collect Social Security benefits.
            1. Summer Solstice—first day of summer and longest day of the year.
            2. World Hydrography Day—celebrated since 2005 to promote international cooperation in safe navigation and protection of the marine environment.
           3. Go Skateboarding Day—celebrated since 2004 to promote the use of skateboards—if walking today good time to be alert and not texting as you may get run over by an errant skateboarder.
           4. Baby Boomers Recognition Day—another unknown holiday celebrating the contributions of the Baby Boomer generation now starting to enter retirement and sucking up Social Security.
           5. Peaches And Cream Day—great way to herald the beginning of summer with a favorite desert.
On this day in:
            a. 1948 Columbia Records introduced the long playing record album at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.
            b. 1964 in one of our intolerant moments in our history, three civil rights workers Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Mickey Schwerner were murdered by the Klu Klux Klan in Mississippi.
            c. 1982 John Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity for his attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan.
Here is a reason why aging Baby Boomers see fewer movies: “If this were a movie, this is when the scary music would start.” David John economist at the Heritage Foundation observing in 2007 that millions of Baby Boomers were beginning to file for Social Security benefits.
