Ridley’s
Believe It Or Not For March 4, 2016. Unfortunately in this leap year, still 322 days to
go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term but fortunately only 1 day
until the start of and my daily updates on the Iditarod, the Last Great Race on
Earth the organizers of which are bringing in trainloads of snow from the
Fairbanks area so the ceremonial start of the race can occur in Anchorage which
is enjoying above freezing weather which will melt the expected snow flurries
Saturday. Interesting theater with less personal attacks and more discussions
of issues at the Fox Theater in Detroit Thursday night with Cruz and Kasich
(the only adult on the stage) giving stellar performances and Trump and Rubio
not having their best nights. Still no word on what the FBI has been able to
recover from her server which may be smoking guns on potential corrupt practices
of her Foundation and the quid pro quo practices of her activities at Secretary
of State and the millions of dollars in speaking fees paid by supplicants to
Bill. The political theater will get even more interesting in the fall as the
general election nears. I trust your Friday
is proving to be a great one; and as always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a
music link to Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, factoids of interest, a relevant quote from Billy Graham while looking
forward to enjoying a generous slice of pound cake, blessed with a positive
attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift
for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can
provide you with a unique customized poem
at a great price tailored to the
event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. World Prayer
Day—an observance started in the U.S. in 1872 and
now observed in 170 countries on the first Friday in March to bring women of
all cultures together and to commemorate fellowship through the power of
prayer.
2. National Dress
in Blue Day—celebrating not Democrats identifying themselves as such but
rather created by the Colon Cancer Alliance in 2009 to create awareness of the
need for research into the cure for colon cancer and always observed on the
first Friday in March.
3. 1993 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1993
on a brief run of one week in that
position A Whole New World (Aladdin’s Theme)
by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle. Here
is a link to Bryson and Belle performing A
Whole New World: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmvT7B3u7II
4. National Pound Cake—celebrating the advent of the pound cake in England
in 1700 a cake consisting of one pound each of butter, flour, sugar, and eggs
and flavored with vanilla or lemon.
5. Like Mother
Like Daughter—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1993
of the daughter of Whitney Houston who like her mother was found face down in
her bath tub and who died after being in a medically induced coma for almost
two years. A judge has just ordered her autopsy and toxicology reports be released
to the public.
On this day in:
a. 1917 Jeanette Rankin of
Montana became the first woman to be elected to the U.S. House of
Representatives. She served two terms
1916-1918 and 1940-1942 and had the distinction of the only member of Congress
to have voted against our declaring war on Germany in World War I and Japan in
World War II.
b. 1933 Frances Perkins became
the first female Cabinet Member by being confirmed as Secretary of Labor.
c. 1957 the S & P 500 was
introduced, replacing the S&P 90.
d. 1974 People magazine was
first published initially as People’s Weekly.
e. 1985 the FDA approved a blood
test for the detection of the AIDS virus which was used to detect the virus in
all blood donations.
Reflections on prayer: “Prayer is the rope that pulls God and man together. But, it doesn’t
pull God down to us: It pulls us up to Him.” - Billy Graham, noted
evangelist.
