Unfortunately, still 335 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term but fortunately only 15 days until the start of and my daily updates on the Iditarod, the Last Great Race on Earth. Interesting theater in South Carolina and Nevada today and a very moving funeral for Justice Scalia at which Obama was MIA. 5. Nirvana in Music Not in Horsecelebrating the birthday on this day in 1967 of Kurt Cobain,  the lead singer and song writer for the band Nirvana that sold over 75 million albums worldwide. but who struggled with heroin addiction and who committed suicide at the age of 27 leaving a wife and very young daughter behind. a. 1792 snail mail began with the signing of the Postal Services Act by President Washington which created the U.S. Postal Service with stamps selling at $.06 to $.12 ( $1.5 to $3 in today’s dollars which explains why the Post Office runs a huge deficit).  
b. 1872 the Metropolitan Museum of Art was opened to the public in New York City.
c. 1943 in a bending of the first amendment due to World War II, movie studio executives agreed to allow the Office of War Information to censor movies.
d. 1962 John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth, making three orbits before splashing down. .
e. 2012 scientists regenerated a 31,800 year old Silene Stenophylla seed that had been buried and then covered by ice in Siberia.
