Ridley’s
Believe It Or Not For February 17, 2016. Unfortunately, still 337 days to go in President
Obama’s pathetic lame duck term but fortunately only 17 days until the start of
the Iditarod, the Last Great Race on Earth. Interesting theater in Nevada as
Sanders has closed to a statistical dead heat with Hillary whose film clip at a
campaign stop barking like a dog certainly got CJ’s attention on Fox this
morning after being a guest for winning Best of Show last night at the
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. I trust your Tuesday is off to a great start
and even if you were not romantic enough to have ordered a customized poem from
the Alaskanpoet, your Valentine’s Day was a great one. As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a
music link to Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, factoids of interest, a relevant quote
by Thomas Hobbes, looking forward to enjoying some Indian pudding, blessed with
a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if
you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can
provide you with a unique customized poem
at a great price tailored to the
event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Digital Learning Day—promoting awareness of the need to overcome the
digital divide between students outside the classroom as having no or very slow
internet access is a kiss of death to one’s educational progress.
2. World Human
Spirit Day—This observance was started by Michael
Levy of Point of Life in 2003 to
promote a human spirit that lives the creative, peaceful, loving life that it
was meant to live and is observed by two
minutes of silent meditation at 3:00 p.m. If you see a bunch of people in the
park suddenly this afternoon go to a lotus position and close their eyes for
two minutes you now know that they are celebrating this observance.
3. 1977 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song
in 1977 on a brief run of one week in that position Blinded By The Light by Manfred
Mann’s Earth Band. Here is a
link to Manfred Mann’s Earth Band performing Blinded By The Light:
4. National Indian Pudding Day—pleasing the
American craving for baked pudding made from cornmeal, molasses, spices and
milk.
5. Air
It Out—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1963
of Michael Jordan, noted basketball player for the Chicago Bulls and product
endorser for Nike and its Air Jordan line of sneakers.
On this day in:
a. 1600 in a no-religion-is-immune-from-barbarism
moments, the philosopher and scientist Giordano Bruno was burned alive for
heresy at the Campo de’ Fiori in Rome.
b. 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland a
group of citizens formed the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded
which later became known as the International Committee of the Red Cross.
c. 1876 sardines were first canned by Julius Wollf
in Eastport, Maine.
d. 1933 the
Blaine Act ended Prohibition in the United States.
e. 1972
cumulative sales for the VW Beetle exceeded those of the Ford Model T, the
first automobile produced on assembly lines.
Reflections on the difference between opinion
and heresy: “They that approve a private opinion call it opinion; but they that
dislike it, heresy; and yet heresy signifies no more than private opinion.”
Thomas Hobbes, noted 17th Century British political philosopher One
way to stifle debate and discussion very quickly is to label an opposing view
as heresy thereby justifying the death of those holding such views.
