Ridley’s
Believe It Or Not For February 12, 2016, 343 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame
duck term. Interesting theater on the political front last night with Hillary
and Bernie pounding each other while the DNC must be worried sick as word has
it the FBI has expanded its probe into possible corruption quid pro quos
involving contributions made to the Clinton Foundation during her tenure as
Secretary of State. I trust your Friday is
off to a great start and as always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a
music link to Al Green, factoids of interest, a relevant quote by a twelve year
old child soldier whose name is, looking forward to enjoying a dish of plum
pudding, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift
for any memorable events like Valentines’ Day birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can
provide you with a unique customized poem
at a great price tailored to the
event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Red Hand Day—protesting the despicable practice of using children as soldiers in
conflicts around the world, primarily in third world countries. Children should
be able to play soldiers but never should be engaged as real ones with real
bullets.
2. Lincoln’s
Birthday Day (U.S.)—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1809
of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, tragically assassinated by
John Wilkes Booth in April of 1865.celebrating the
contributions of inventors to this nation and the world.
3. 1972 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song
in 1972 on a brief run of one week in that position Let’s Stay Together by Al Green. Here is a link to Al Green performing Let’s Stay Together:
4. National Plum Pudding Day--celebrating another
great desert that is loaded with iron and great for relieving constipation.
5. Twitch
The Night Away—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1990
of Scott Bund independent videogame streamer and co-host of the very popular
variety show Late Night with Cry and Russ on Twitch.
On this day in:
a. 1851 Edward Hargraves
announced that he had found gold at Bathhurst, New South Wales, Australia,
setting off the Australian Gold Rush.
b. 1909 the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was formed.
c. 1914 the first stone of the Lincoln Memorial was
laid.
d. 1954
Lyons’ LEO (Lyons Electronic Office) produced a payroll report, the first time
a computer had been used for business purposes.
e. 2001 in
an amazing feat of celestial navigation, NEAR Shoemaker became the first spacecraft to
land on an asteroid, 433 Eros. Note the craters on its surface and its non
spherical shape.
Reflections on the use of child soldiers: “If you join the paramilitaries [the AUC in Columbia],
your first duty is to kill. They tell you, "Here you are going to
kill." From the very beginning, they teach you how to kill. I mean when
you arrive at the camp, the first thing they do is kill a guy, and if you are a
recruit they call you over to prick at him, to chop off his hands and arms.” A
age 12 ISIS routinely kidnaps young children for their Caliphate Cubs and
forces them into combat. Using children as soldiers is a War Crime but ISIS is
not bound by the rules of humanity which is why they must be wiped off the face
of the Earth.
