We humans may be at the top of the
food chain feeling there is nothing we cannot overcome
When a child is struck with a disease we
believe that with science we can overcome
A natural hope and all parents’ belief
That regardless of the diagnosis
modern medicine will spare them from grief
A portal to rationed care in England
for a tiny infant Charlie Gard
A national health service that
experimental treatment barred
Into courts and into the court of
public opinion with only the slimmest of hope
Watching their youngest son slip
away one can only imagine how they could cope
No parent should ever have to bury a
child where there is a saving chance
After all that is the miracle of
modern medicine which our longevity continues to advance
Where the English courts were
prepared to close the hospital treatment room doors
U.S. doctors and hospitals were
prepared to the odds of failure ignore
Alas not to be and Charlie Gard will
leave this world before his first birthday
Leaving his parents in grief and tears
to display
A sad note that as humans we are
mortal despite all the science and miracles of modern medical wonders
Despite all our best efforts and
prayers the dark boatman may come for us to tear our dreams asunder
Prayers with the parents of this
brave little boy
Sad a lifetime of birthdays they and
he will never enjoy
