So much for
the adage that to stop a charging brown bear
One needs a
shotgun with double ought slugs against one charging out of his lair
An 11 year
old with uncles, dad and cousin walking along a near Hoonah trail
Was able
with his pump action shotgun a charging grizzly nail
The bear ran
through the uncles and was ready to his dad maul
No chance to
unsling his rifle, no chance to the charge with a shot end or stall
His son had
no sling so his gun was in his hands and he was able to shoot
Only problem
his gun was loaded with bird shot not good for stopping ursine brutes
His first
shot hit the bear on the shoulder, to absolutely no effect
The second
hit the bear in the nose down and through his neck
Halting the
mauling and giving an uncle time to unsling his rifle and bring it to bear
Thanks to an
eleven year old and no sling an answer to a parent’s prayer
The moral of
the story is that if you are going fishing remember brown bears like to fish
If your gun
is on sling on your shoulder have a 44 magnum on your hip or you may become a
bear’s next dish
