January 25, 2023 Ridley's Believe It Or Not

The CDC has not fared well in shifting pronouncements on C0VID-19 nor has social media in banning doctors who raised concerns over the vaccines’ safety and efficacy but Newsom’s Banana Republic seems to have crossed the line passing a bill punishing doctors with loss of license if they question “consensus medical judgment” and a California judge has issued a preliminary injunction preventing its enforcement (seems like only yesterday that bleeding was the recommended treatment of many ailments). The 49’ers must be thanking their luck stars that they ignored negative scouting reports and drafted “Mr. Irreverent” to start against the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game this Sunday. I hope you also enjoy today’s Ridley's Believe It Or Not  and find it worthy to read and if not reply “Unsubscribe” to be removed.
Ridley’s Believe It Or Not January 25, 2023
Noted Holidays: National Irish Coffee Clueless who created this holiday or when first celebrated but Irish coffee as the perfect Ying and Yang drink was believed to have been first created at Foynes Restaurant in Foynes, Ireland where the flying boats across the Atlantic docked and on one flight a flying boat took off but the weather was so bad it returned to a closed terminal which was opened to accommodate the frustrated but relieved passengers who asked chef Joe Sheridan for something warm which prompted him to serve coffee with a bit of whiskey calling the drink Irish coffee. The drink migrated to the Buena Vista Bar in San Francisco after Joe Sheridan was induced to leave his job at Shannon Airport to replicate the right amount of cream. Only in an Irish coffee can you mix stimulant of caffeine with the depressant of alcohol.
Word of the Day: The word of the day is “adynamia” which means weakness or a lack of strength which is what our president projects and will really project if he is foolish enough to run in 2024.
Number 1 Song of the Day: The number 1 song on this day in 1976 was “Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You Are Going To)” by Dianna Ross on a run of 1 week to share with 26 other songs achieving number 1 status, while 15 acts achieved their first number 1 song.  Here is a music video of Dianna Rose performing “Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You Are Going To)”:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aFXN7Yrx7g
Noted Birthdays: Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine who was born on this day in 1978, whose birthday wish list is pretty short—Have Putin and his Russian war criminals leave his country and receive the weapons from NATO to give his forces the ability to force them to leave.
Notable Events that occurred on January 25:
          1.     1971—Charles Manson and 4 “Manson Family” members were convicted of 6 murders in Los Angeles on two nights in August, 1969 known the Tate-La Bianca murders.
          2.     1996—Billy Baily of Delaware had the dubious distinction of being the last person hanged in the United States at the grounds of the Delaware Correctional Center at Smyrna for killing in cold blood a senior husband and wife in their home in 1979 and convicted in 1980. He had the choice of hanging or lethal injection and chose hanging.
          3.     1998—Pope John Paul II visited Cuba demanding political reform and release of political prisoners while condemning U.S. attempts to isolate the island nation.
          4.     2003—50 peace activists left London heading through Europe to encourage people to join them as “human shields” to prevent the attack on Iraq by the U.S. and its coalition forces ultimately swelling to 500 who realized that the number was not sufficient and started to leave with 80 remaining at selected sites none of which were destroyed or damaged and none of the 80 were killed or wounded but the invasion was not stopped and Hussein was overthrown and executed.
          5.     2011—In what would be known as the “Egyptian Revolution”, millions of Egyptians took to the streets to protest the abuses of President Mubarak, rioting, and going on strike in numbers that defied the attempts by police to halt the protests and violence which ended after 17 days with the resignation of Mubarak, family members and top government officials.
Quote of the Day: Judith Butler, Distinguished Professor at  the Graduate School at the University of California at Berkeley on the Egyptian Revolution: “ I am sorry to be so blunt, but I do not see much ambiguity here. [Barack] Obama was late to affirm the Egyptian revolution as a democratic movement, and even then he was eager to have installed those military leaders who were known for their practices of torture. And now he is quick to make allies with the Muslim Brotherhood for tactical reasons as well (though earlier that same administration stoked Islamophobic fear about that very political party).”
