January 16, 2023 Ridley's Believe It Or Not

Today we observe and celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, honoring the birth and accomplishments of a man born on January 15, 1929 and who was tragically assassinated on April 4, 1968 and who must be rolling in his grave today seeing his dream of judging people not by the color of their skin but the content of their character being corrupted by the spreading Woke culture such as CRT and Project 1619 and the proclivity of too many people hurling the charge of racism at anyone who may disagree however slight with their policies. The scandal of Biden’s possessing classified documents in 3 different unsecured locations continues to grow troubling even leading Blues and perhaps leading to speculation that Blue Presidential Wanna-Be’s like Governor Newsom, V.P. Harris and others, hoping the age and cognitive health issues will cause Biden not to run, may have some involvement in the disclosure of classified documents. California is being hammered by strong winter storms which have killed 19, caused 500 mudslides and has 8 million residents under a flood watch ending at midnight tonight. Hope you enjoyed the weekend of NFL Football Playoff games with your team advancing and are mourning the Trojan’s upset of Number 2 Stanford Cardinal Women’s Basketball Team on Saturday. I hope you also enjoy today’s Ridley's Believe It Or Not  and find it worthy to read and if not reply “Unsubscribe” to be removed.
Ridley’s Believe It Or Not January 16, 2023

Noted Holidays: Religious Freedom Day, Created by Presidential Proclamation by George W. Bush on December 9.1992 and first celebrated on January 16, 1993, the anniversary in 1786 of the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom which became part of the First Amendment to the Constitution. The day celebrates the freedom of all faiths to worship in the faith of their choice without interference by government or requirement of a state religion.
Word of the Day: The word of the day is “adiaphoresis” which means an inability to perspire which means of world of hurt for those with the problem in hot weather or intensive exercise.
Number 1 Song of the Day: The number 1 song on this day in 1985 was “Like a Virgin” by Madonna on a run of 4 weeks following 2 in 1985 to share with 26 other songs achieving number 1 status of which a record of 13 were performed by British acts while 17 acts achieved their first number 1 song.  Here is a music video of Madonna with lyrics singing “Like a Virgin”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC-0K2Dm5XQ
Noted Birthdays: Kate Moss, a British super model and pioneer in the fashion style heroin chic, was born on this day in 1974. Her career hit a speed bump which accused of drug usage which she did not admit and managed to return to her high priced model status. A former party-girl in her youth, she is going strong with her own modeling agency and success in the fashion model business and believed to be clean and sober.
Notable Events that occurred on January 16:
          1.     1919—Nebraska became the 36th State to approve the 18th Amendment which ratified the 18th Amendment to the Constitution mandating Prohibition begin on January 17, 1920.
          2.     1969—In a world’s first Soviet Space Craft Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5 performed a docking  and a crew transfer which because of the primitive nature of the docking tunnel had to be performed by a spacewalk between the two space craft. On Soyus 5’s return after the transfer, the landing rockets and parachutes failed to deploy as planned, causing a rough landing severe enough to have a cosmonaut break some teeth. 2 months later Apollo 9 duplicated the docking feat but did so internally without the need to perform a more dangerous spacewalk.
          3.     1992—El Salvadoran officials and rebel leaders signed the  Chapultepec Peace Accords in Mexico City bringing a ceasefire never broken to bring an end to the 12 year Salvadoran Civil War which had claimed an estimated 75,000 lives.
          4.     2003—The Space Shuttle Columbia was launched on its Mission STS-107 from the Kennedy Space Center not knowing that some of its heat resistant tiles had been damaged, causing it to disintegrate 16 days later while reentering the Earth’s atmosphere, killing all aboard.
          5.     2020—The Senate affirmed  the United States-Mexico-Canada Act which ended the Clinton-Era NAFTA which had proven to be a complete disaster for American manufacturers.
Quote of the DayEric Chang, Stories of Civil War in El Salvador: A Battle Over Memory: A good part of the state’s assets were privatized, including electric power distribution, banks, and telecommunications. The country lacks a national currency, having shifted from the colón to the U.S. dollar in 2001. The country’s main export is people, who travel to and remain in the United States and other countries and send back remittances, which constitute one of the largest contributions to the nation’s GDP; drug money-laundering may bring in more than remittances, but nobody knows for sure. A sizable proportion of economically viable enterprises are now owned wholly or partially by multinational corporations, including the important banks, all communications (mobile phones and internet), beer, petroleum derivatives, and airlines. The country imports a lot of what it consumes, especially foodstuffs, energy, and health products, which is reflected in a chronic trade deficit that would be unsustainable were it not for remittances.” Explains why we should expect little if any assistance from the nation is stopping the flow of illegals to our Southern Border.
