Believe It Or Not—July 24, 2014: Another meager day of holidays
but you are probably on vacation anyway and do not need the time off. Hope you
enjoy what is posted, along with the factoids and quote from Nikita Khrushchev
with a smile on your face and a shot of tequila in your hand.
1. Amelia
Earhart Day —celebrating
the birthday of a great female aviator born on this day in 1897 who disappeared
in the Pacific in 1937 while attempting a circumnavigation of the globe.
2. Mormon
Pioneer Day—commemorating
Brigham Young’s arrival in 1847 in what later would be known as Salt Lake City
and proclamation that this site was God’s place for Mormons.
3. Cousins
Day—what’s buzzin cousin? Great day to celebrate your aunt’s and uncle’s
children, kissing or otherwise.
4. National
Tequila Day—celebrating that fiery cactus based Mexican spirit though
not sure why not celebrated on the 5th of May.
On this
day in:
a. 1935 in a preclimate change moment
the Dust Bowl heat wave peaked wit temperatures of 109 in Chicago.
b. 1959 in Moscow Vice President Richard
Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev have a Kitchen Debate.
c. 1966 in a foolish moment, Michael
Pelkey and Brain Schubert made the first BASE jump from El Capitan with both
landing with broken bones; a feat now banned.
For all his pounding of a shoe on the table at the UN, Khrushchev
actually sometimes had it right: “Politicians are the same all over. They are
always promising to build bridges where there are no rivers.” Nikita Khrushchev
