Ridley's Believe It Or Not July 15 History Gummi Worm Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—July 15, 2014:  Totally skunked today on holidays but at least found a few factoids and a quote related to social media for you to enjoy.
           1. Respect the Elderly Day--if you are vacationing in the island nation of Kiriboti (the Gilbert Islands) and approaching the winter of your life, this is your day.
           2. Mongo Is Your Friend Day—celebrating the birth of Alex Karras in 1935 the great near-sighted lineman for the Detroit Lions who after retiring starred as Mongo in the hilarious Mel Brooks film Blazing Saddles.
           3. St. Swithin’s Day—if you are in Britain on vacation, this is the day to observe the weather; what you see will be according to legend the weather for the next 40 days.
           4. Gummi Worm Day—celebrating great decadent snack created back in 1981.
On this day in:
           a. 1910 in his book Clinical Psychiatry, Emil Kraepelin gave a name to Alzheimer’s disease, naming it after his colleague Alois Alzheimer.
           b. in 1979 in what was a swan song of his presidency Jimmy Carter gave what became known as the “malaise speech”: wherein he characterized the greatest threat to the country as "this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of purpose for our nation" but in which he never uses the word malaise.
           c. in 2006 to the bane of those who want more than 140 characters but thrive on social media, Twitter was launched.
“These days most of us have the attention span of a meth-addicted squirrel.” Kristen Lamb author of Rise of the Machines-Human Authors in a Digital World  Sadly, a very astute observation.
