       1. World Elephant Day—celebrating since 2011 the need to preserve and protect the world’s largest land mammals who sadly are slaughtered for their ivory.                              
       2. International Youth Day—celebrating since 2000 by UN Proclamation to create awareness of the issues facing the world’s youth.

       a. 1692 Governor William Phipps of Massachusetts ended the Salem Witch Trials.  
       b. 1823 Charles Macintosh sold the first raincoat, an item which in California has spent far too much time in the closet.
       c. 1901 in a what’s in a name moment Teddy Roosevelt renamed the Executive Mansion to the White House.

       e. 2000 the USS Cole while berthed in Aden was severely damaged by speed boat loaded with explosives, killing 19 and wounding 39.    
Reflections on elephants and whether we as fellow mammals are doing all that is possible to protect this magnificent species:  The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book? David Attenborough noted British broadcaster and naturalist
