In our youth
we are immortal and the idea of the thief in the night
Is a
potential reality so far removed from our sight
If you are self
viewed as immortal no need to ever contemplate a savage survival fight
But as the
summer turns into fall and the chilling winds begin to bight
The human
spirit begins to forge against any foreseen or unforeseen blight
In the play
of life rare is the chance for a human to write his or her final script
When age or
disease want to turn the stage into a crypt
Valerie
Harper was diagnosed as a victim of cancer’s often fatal might
Three months
to live in 2009 but decided a stage would be a better site
Did not
quit, fought and back to the stage to avoid the mortal bite
A great
talent but a fighter who would not quit and was winning in a delaying fight
Cancer be
damned she would dance with the stars under the TV lights
Six more
years of her talent for us mere mortals watching to excite
News today
is that in a coma to a hospital but not yet ready for last rites
At 75
released and now resting for the night
We mere
mortals can only admire and hope for more performances to the applause ignite
And pray God
likes His balcony seat and is not ready for a higher stage for you to invite
