Ridley's Believe It Or Not—September 1, 2014: Trust
your Labor Day is a great one and that you enjoy the holidays of dubious distinction
in the shadow of Labor Day along with the factoids and quote from Ernest
Hemingway with a smile on your sunscreened face, a positive attitude and a tasty gyro in
your hand, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a
memorable event, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique
customized poem tailored to the event and the recipient. Great game by the
Cardinal but unfortunately also great game by the resurgent Trojans—will be
interesting at the Farm this Saturday.
1. Labor Day—honoring since 1887 the American worker and also the
official start of the campaign season which unofficially started months ago.
2. Emma M. Nutt Day—honoring the first woman
telephone operator who started her job on this day in 1878; now a position
almost completely replaced by machines.
3. 49-0-0 Day—honoring one of the great
heavyweight boxing champions of all time Rocky Marciano, the Brockton
Blockbuster born on this day in 1923. He never lost a fight and 43 of his 49
wins were by knockout—He lost his life on August 31, 1969 in a small plane
crash returning back to his home for a surprise birthday party his wife had
planned.
4. National
Gyros Day –celebrating that tasty treat from Greece.
On this day in
a. 1902 the film A Trip to the Moon was shown in France;
it was considered to be the first science fiction movie.
b. 1952 the Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Old Man and the Sea
authored by Ernest Hemingway was published.
c. 1958 Iceland expanded its
fishing zone bringing it into conflict with Great Britain and commencing the
Cod Wars.
d. 1983 a Korean Air 747 clearly
a passenger airplane was shot down by a Russian jet, killing all aboard with
a typical Russian deceitful lie that the plane was in Russian airspace on a
spy mission. As we have recently seen in Ukraine with a Malaysian Air 777,
nothing has changed when Russians are involved.
Why
preparation and practice is a good thing: “Only I have no luck any more. But
who knows? Maybe today. Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But
I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready.” Ernest Hemingway, great
writer killed too soon by his own hand.
