Iditarod Tails March 9, 2017 5:00 a.m.
The first four leaders out of
Ruby heading to the next checkpoint at Galena 50 miles away (experiencing a
nippy -17 and a high of 10 today) are Mitch Seavey, Joar Ulsom, Nicolas Petit
and Peter Kaiser with a 2 hr. 45 min. gap between first and fourth. Ruby’s
population of 187 has been augmented by 17 mushers and over 250 tired dogs
sleeping on straw including Wade Marrs (5) Dallas Seavey (6), Michelle Phillips
(7), Jessie Royer (8), Aliy Zirkle (9) and Ritchie Diehl (10) to round out the
top ten. Sebastien Vergnaud (12), rookie and grandson of the cofounder of the
Iditarod Robert Redington (19) and Hugh Neff (21) are the last of the leaders
to arrive in Ruby. 44 mushers have entered and left Tanana, including rookie Laura
Neese (35), the Barington twins Anna and Kristy (41) and (42) running two
minutes apart most likely by design to have someone to talk to, Dee Dee Jonrove
(53), and Zoya Denure, a former fashion
and runway moded for 12 years (57) round out the some of the notable mushers
that have left Tanana, leaving only four in the checkpoint--Cindy Abbot (67), rookie Roger Lee (68), Ellen Halverson
(69) and Jimmy Lebling (70) in last place. Another update later in the day.
Here is a photo of Jody Bailey taking a breather to apply some needed
