College for
many has always been a sacrosanct almost Holy Grail
Even though
a four year degree often means a debt load to impale
As long as a
student could borrow and take on more debt
Tuition and
faculty salaries could continue to rise faster than a speeding jet
As long as the
sheepskin meant that the graduate could land a good paying job
His debt
load could be repaid and dreams of family and home it would not rob
But that
link for many, especially in the liberal arts
Is becoming
frayed and coming apart
Faculty
salaries are going off the charts
How much
useful knowledge to many students do they impart?
Do we need a
growing generation of history majors so burdened they are still in the nest?
When
plumbers, electricians, oil workers, tech geeks have no difficulty of filling
their dream war
chests
As long as
the student debt spigot this Administration wants to keep open we are in a race
students
cannot win
Colleges
will raise their tuition faster than inflation and debt burdened a student is
in a downward
spiral spin.
