November 24, 2016 Ridley's Believe It Or Not National Day of Mourning

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For November 24, 2016 Happy Thanksgiving! As you enjoy your feast with family and friends and a day of football that will seem to never end, more so than ever a chance to give thanks and to give and more so than ever before a time for this divided country to unite and move forward as one to insure that the rising tide of hopeful prosperity floats all boats and leaves no American floundering and shivering in the cold, freezing waters of hopeless despair--
http://alaskanpoet.blogspot.com/2016/11/approaching-thanksgiving-thoughts.html; President-Elect Trump released a short video prayer calling for unity and healing in order to move the country forward (pray that Red, Blue, Green, Libertarian and Independents give him the benefit of the doubt and join his unity call-- http://www.reuters.com/video/2016/11/23/trump-offers-prayers-for-unity-in-thanks?videoId=370542652&videoChannel=1&channelName=Top+News); the fat lady may not have sung as the Green Party (which appears to be a stalking horse for Clinton) that received a whooping one percent of the total vote nationally has filed for a recount in three battleground states that Trump narrowly won—Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan (Wisconsin and Pennsylvania flipped to Hillary would leave him 10 electoral votes shy of 270 needing Michigan’s 16 electoral votes to restore his status as President-Elect), raising $2.5 million to pay for one recount and needing $2 million more for the remaining two requested (do I detect the heavy dollar hand of Soros?); it is great that Trump has assembled his national security team as he may be tested even before taking office as Pakistan is threatening full scale war with India (which given the fact both possess nuclear weapons a real frightening thought especially if as a result of the Green Party’s actions we are in a transition crisis similar to the chad crisis in Florida in 2000 with no Scalia around to end Gore’s nonsense); in a chilling reminder that Blue Lives Matter, the Wayne State police officer shot in the head has died and in Birmingham a black couple, the male of which claimed to be a Black Panther, were arrested of plotting to kill police after planting a fake bomb outside an elementary school; ISIS’s plea to have MACY’s Thanksgiving Parade attacked may have been thwarted by over 80 sanitation trucks filled with sand to block access to the route to prevent a repeat of the slaughter in Nice, France.
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Bing Crosby, factoids of interest for this day in history, a relevant quote from Erma Bombeck, while looking forward to enjoying some sardines before feasting on one’s turkey dinner, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Evolution Day—celebrating the initial publication of The Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin on this day in 1854.
2. National Day of Mourning—created by Native American groups to coincide with Thanksgiving to promote awareness of the disasters and broken treaties inflicted upon Native Americans by Americans following the landing of the Pilgrims in 1620.
3. 1942 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1942 on a run of 11 weeks in that position “White Christmas” by the Bing Crosby. Here is a recording of Bing Crosby performing what has to be the best selling record of all times:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJSUT8Inl14
4. National Sardines Day—celebrating on Thanksgiving not any of the traditional components of a Thanksgiving feast like turkey, yams, mashed potatoes or cranberry sauce but a food item that has never even made it into the stuffing, but still high in Omega-3 fatty acids that are great for the heart.
5. Maybe We Do Need a Death Penalty—bemoaning the birth on this day in 1946 of Ted Bundy, a psychopathic serial killer and rapist of young women in the early 70’s who killed 36 and may have killed dozens upon dozens more who was tried, convicted and finally executed by the State of Florida in 1989.
On this day in:
a. 1835 the Provisional Government of Texas authorized the creation of a horse mounted police force known as the Texas Rangers, still operating today.
b. 1877 Anna Sewell’s novel Black Beauty was published and later memorialized by the film of the same name starring a young Elizabeth Taylor.
c. 1917 in Milwaukee, nine police officers were killed by a bomb, the highest loss of police in the line of duty until the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center
d. 1963 in a very bad day for the Dallas Police Department caught live on television, Lee Harvey Oswald was shot and killed in the basement of the Dallas Police Department’s headquarters by Jack Ruby while being led by Dallas police officers.
e. 1974 Donald Johanson and Tom Gray discovered the 40% complete fossilized skeleton of Australopithecus afarensis in the Awash Valley in Ethiopia that they nicknamed “Lucy.”
e. 2015 Blue Origin’s rocket Blue Shepard became the first unmanned rocket to be launched into outer space and return to Earth in a vertical landing—commercial manned flights for tourists are scheduled to begin in 2018.
Reflections on one’s Thanksgiving meal: “Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence.” Erma Bombeck, noted humorist but on this one off by three minutes (15 not 12).
