We
all know that wearing a shield is danger fraught
Something
so innocent as a traffic stop could get you shot
The
motto and slogan has two parts to protect and to serve
Protect
is easy as it involves giving the bad guys what they deserve
But
the serve part is more complex and calls for a wider range of skills
If not performed well community relations
quickly go down hill
In
Hot Springs, Arkansas, fortunately the State Troopers have those skills
A
boy’s wish for a birthday party they were able to fulfill
21
invites to a ten year old’s celebration a mom sent out
Five
were supposed to show up but on the big day zero was the count
Birthdays
for adults are not a big deal unless you are getting up in years
But
for a ten year old a lot of disappointment and probably some tears
Mom
posted on her Facebook account her son’s sad tale
Probably
cursing herself that as a mom she thought she had failed
Two
days later there was a knock on the door
Loud
enough not to ignore
Five
State Troopers not with a warrant to serve or guns drawn
But
to celebrate with presents and a cake stepping up from the lawn
Somehow
they had learned of the birthday party that went so flat
And
good for them they acted to remedy that
For
an hour or so shooting baskets with the boy
Munching
cake and watching him with their gifts enjoy
This
is a story of a community that reaffirms one’s belief in the inherent goodness
of mankind
Yet
another way that “to serve” to the joy of a ten year old was happily defined
