Ridley's Believe It Or Not October 9 History Leif Erickson Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not—October 9, 2015 Trust your Friday is proving to be a great one and better yet your weekend plans are set; and as always I hope you enjoy Friday’s holidays and observances, factoids of interest, a music video by Larry Verne,  a relevant quote from a true woman of courage and inspiration that should have Islamic fanatics quaking—Malala Yousafzai, looking forward to enjoying a hoagie, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
          1. World Post Day—commemorating the establishment in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland of the Universal Postal Union which resulted in people all over the globe to mail to others residing outside their own country—just another milestone in making this globe a smaller and more connected place.
          2. Leif Erickson Day—celebrating the fact that Leif Erickson in an open boat reached North America almost 500 years before Christopher Columbus; the day October 9 was chosen to commemorate the first ship, the Restauration, which was filled with Norwegian immigrants that landed on this day in 1825 in New York City.
           3. 1960 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1960 on a brief run of 1 week in that position Mister Custer by Larry Verne.  Here is a link to Larry Verne performing Mister Custer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXuPJNXjlRM
          4.  National Submarine-Hoagie-Hero-Grinder Day—celebrating that great sandwich that goes by multiple names depending what city you are in.
           5. Blessed Is The Voice Day—celebrating not that great TV show displaying aspiring musical talent, The Voice, but rather the birthday on this day in 1936 of noted British actor and voice actor Brian Blessed.
On this day in:
            a. 1701 the Collegiate School of Connecticut (later renamed Yale University) was chartered in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.
            b. 1865 the first underground pipeline for transmitting oil was laid in Pennsylvania.
            c. 1967 a day after being captured, Marxist revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara was executed for trying to incite revolution in Bolivia.
            d.  1995 Amtrak’s Sunset Limited near Palo Verde, Arizona was derailed by a saboteur, killing one person and injuring over seventy in a crime that to this day has never been solved and explains today why today Amtrak does not go through Phoenix, the most populous city in Arizona to the great disappointment of trainophiles like the Alaskanpoet.
            e. 2012 women’s rights activist and educator Malala Yousafzai was shot three times by a Taliban gunman in the Swat District of Pakistan where the Taliban banned girls from going to school. Fortunately, she survived and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.
Reflections on why radical Islam is doomed to ultimately fail. “The terrorists thought they would change my aims and stop my ambitions, but nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage were born.” Malala Yousafzai Any ideology that condemns over half of the population to permanent second class citizenship and denies education to them belongs in the trash heap of history.
